Ramon Magsaysay Award winner and veteran journalist Ravish Kumar has resigned from NDTV India, the channel he had been working with for nearly the past two decades and had become one of its most well-known faces.
Kumar quit NDTV on 30 November 2022, a day after the channel’s founders and promoters Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy resigned as directors on the board of RRPR Holding Private Limited. The Roys resigned from the channel to reportedly facilitate its takeover by the Adani Group.
Ravish Kumar has a legion of fans of his style of journalism in India and abroad, and a fairly large number of critics as well.
Best known face
Some of the flagship programmes that he hosted for NDTV included Prime Time, Hum Log, Ravish Ki Report, and Des Ki Baat.
Born on 5 December 1974 in Bihar, Ravish Kumar was twice conferred with the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award for the Best Journalist of the Year and became the fifth Indian journalist to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2019.
He was included on the list of 100 most influential Indians (2016) by The Indian Express.
Big impact
Suparna Singh, president of NDTV Group, was quoted by media reports as saying: “Few journalists have impacted people as much as Ravish. This reflects in the immense feedback about him; in the crowds he draws everywhere; in the prestigious awards and recognition he has received, within India and internationally; and in his daily reports, which champion the rights and needs of those who are under-served.”
Meanwhile, in his first reaction after his resignation, the veteran journalist said on his YouTube channel, “This day had to come soon or later; there are many news channels in this country, but all of them are Godi Media. They all claim to do journalism, but everything has been finished by them including the basic principles of journalism.”
