It was a day of great turmoil and rapid developments in Bangladesh as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country after weeks of protests and violence had rocked the country.

The Bangladeshi army said it would lift a curfew, and all government and private institutions would open from 6am (0000 GMT) on Tuesday.

Weeks of violent student protests had led to the toppling of Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina’s government on Monday, marking a tumultuous end to her 15-year tenure.

Around 300 people have been killed in the demonstrations so far.

“An interim government will be formed,” army chief Waker-Uz-Zamanhe, told a news briefing after meeting with leaders of Bangladeshi political parties, excluding those from Hasina’s Awami League party.

He also confirmed Hasina’s departure.
