After a glorious Test career, Rohit Sharma decides to hang up his boots; to continue playing ODIs

Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect, as revealed in a statement on his social media platforms. He confirmed, however, that he will continue to represent India in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

“Hello everyone, I would like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” Sharma stated.

This decision marks the end of an illustrious 11-year career in the game’s longest format. Sharma played 67 Test matches, captaining the side in 24 of them after taking over from Virat Kohli in 2022. He retires with a total of 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries.

Regarded as one of the greatest ODI opening batters in cricket history, Sharma has captained India across all three formats. Following India’s triumph at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, he also announced his retirement from T20 Internationals. Most recently, he led India to victory in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Sharma holds numerous batting records, including the most runs in T20 Internationals, the most sixes in international cricket, the highest number of double centuries in ODIs, and the most centuries (seven) in Cricket World Cups. He also shares the record for most hundreds (five) in T20 Internationals.

Additionally, he holds the world record for the highest individual score in a One Day International—264 runs—and for the most centuries in a single World Cup edition, achievements that earned him the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award in 2019.

Notably, Rohit Sharma remains the first and only captain to lead a team to the final of every ICC tournament.
