Are we in for lockdowns once again? mpox strain raises worldwide concerns

Concerns with mpox, specifically its novel strain, Clade Ib, are becoming more and more prevalent, as noted by Dr. Kluge, WHO’s Regional Director for Europe

Concerns over the potential for yet another global lockdown are growing as global health experts keep an eye on the growing threat posed by mpox.

Many are wondering if history may repeat itself, replicating the worldwide lockdowns imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the disease spreads quickly throughout African countries.

WHO specialist Dr. Hans Kluge has provided comfort amid these worries, saying that although mpox is a dangerous illness, it does not require the same extreme measures as COVID-19.

Concerns with mpox, specifically its novel strain, Clade Ib, are becoming more and more prevalent, as noted by Dr. Kluge, WHO’s Regional Director for Europe. Because of this strain’s high death rate of 10–11%, concerns have been raised.

Dr. Kluge, however, underlined, that despite the variant’s severity, the international community has the resources and expertise necessary to successfully stop its spread.
