Former US President Donald Trump – the Republican seeking a second term in office – survived an assassination attempt Saturday as gunshots fired at a political rally in Pennsylvania pierced his ear.
Footage of the incident showed the bloodied face of the former US president after he ducked to escape the gunshots.
The suspected shooter has died. One person attending the rally also reportedly died in the incident.
“This evening, we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt against our former president Donald Trump. It’s still an active crime scene,” media reports quoted special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office Kevin Rojek as saying.
Trump, writing on his social media site Truth Social after the incident, said a bullet had pierced the upper part of his right ear, media reports added.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening,” he wrote, adding: “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country.”
The incident drew widespread condemnation from leaders across the world, including Trump’s political rival US President Joe Biden.
