In an unexpected turn of events, the United States, India, and Pakistan jointly announced an immediate ceasefire agreement between the two South Asian nuclear-armed nations. However, shortly after the announcement, India reported multiple violations of the newly established ceasefire.
The durability of the ceasefire remains uncertain, as reports of breaches emerged within hours of the agreement. The announcement had come as a surprise, particularly given that tensions between the two countries appeared to be escalating earlier in the day.
During a press briefing, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that there had been a breach of the understanding reached between the Directors General of Military Operations of both countries. He noted that Indian armed forces were providing “an adequate and appropriate” response to the provocations.
“We urge Pakistan to take the necessary measures to address these violations and to handle the situation with the seriousness and responsibility it demands,” the Foreign Secretary added.
According to reports by Times Now, explosions were heard in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, and power outages were imposed in several border regions due to suspected drone intrusions. Similar incidents of aerial incursions were also reported along the western sector of the India-Pakistan border.
