Along with the announcement on Tuesday that the left-wing New Popular Front alliance had decided on a prime minister candidate, French President Emmanuel Macron said he would retain his caretaker centrist administration in place for the duration of the Olympics.
“Our duty is to guarantee the success of the Games,” Macron said to France 2 channel.
“It is clear that we are not in a situation to change things until mid-August because we would create disorder,” he added.
Macron’s remarks came after the New Popular Front declared that it would want to see civil servant Lucie Castets lead a government.
Preliminary competition in certain sports starts on Wednesday and the Paris Olympics are scheduled to begin on Friday.
