Monty Panesar, the former English international cricketer, has lashed out at the alleged targeting/abuse of the Sikh community in the UK, following the recent developments in Afghanistan.
“So it starts again, as it did after 9/11,” Panesar posted on his LinkedIn profile recently while noting that his friend Deljit Singh experienced this.
“This is not acceptable,” he wrote on LinkedIn, adding: “Please share this and lets raise the awareness.”
The English spinner who made his Test cricket debut in 2006 made a plea not to confuse turbaned Sikhs with the Taliban.
“On a serious note many turban wearers you will encounter are Sikhs. Our turban is an integral part of the Sikh religion. We treat our turban with respect, it is our crown…,” wrote the cricketer who’s widely considered one of the best spinners to have played for England.
“Sikhism is not a branch of any other religion it does not follow the ideologies of others, especially the Taliban. Our Guru’s fought for equality for all and the welfare of all irrespective of their circumstance – Sarbat Da Bhalla,” he wrote in the post.
“Don’t confuse me and other turbaned Sikhs with Taliban we have nothing in common.”
Panesar slammed the Taliban for their “beyond Neanderthal” thinking on equality, women’s rights, kindness, compassion, equality etc.
