PICTURE TALK
Raj Kapoor and his sons in the same frame – in this case, Randhir Kapoor on his right and Rishi Kapoor on the left – was quite a sight. Once I saw them standing together and clicked their pictures.
I must admit here that over the years I have invariably avoided asking my subjects – even if they were family members, as in this case – to come together to shoot their pictures. I guess it has always been a problem with me. I cannot handle more than one subject at a time.
I have always had an utter disdain for “commands” or “requests” of fellow cameramen as they shout stuff like… “sir please come closer!”, “sir shake hands please!”, “smile please” et al, and then firing their flash guns in tearing hurry without ever knowing, or even caring to know, what kind of pictures they had captured!
In this picture, I think it was the dark glasses that all three were wearing – the specs had different shapes and sizes – that attracted me to click them, apart from, of course, their large, flashy colourful ties!
The very fact that they were all wearing coats – it must have been a winter month when the sunlight is pleasing and soft, not requiring one to wear gobbles meant for protecting eyes from the harsh summer sunlight – was an added attraction for me to go ahead and freeze ‘Raj Kapoor and Sons’ in this frame.
