Renewed concerns as two Covid-related deaths, 257 active cases reported in India

India is witnessing a concerning resurgence of COVID-19 cases, with a total of 257 active cases currently reported nationwide. This development has raised alarms reminiscent of earlier phases of the pandemic. In Mumbai, two recent fatalities associated with COVID-19 were recorded at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital.

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, both individuals had underlying health conditions. One was a 14-year-old suffering from kidney failure due to nephrotic syndrome, and the other a 54-year-old patient undergoing cancer treatment.

Kerala, meanwhile, has reported the highest number of new infections since May 12, with 69 cases. It is followed by Maharashtra with 44 cases and Tamil Nadu with 34.

Other states reporting new cases include Karnataka (8), Gujarat (6), Delhi (3), and one case each from Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim.

As of May 19, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had reported 93 active cases. The rise to 257 cases underscores the importance of renewed vigilance and awareness, particularly regarding symptoms associated with the latest variant.

Meanwhile, several countries across Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand, are experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases, largely driven by new Omicron sub-variants such as JN.1 and its derivatives, including LF.7 and NB.1.8.

While the growing number of cases is concerning, official data indicates that the majority of current infections in India are mild and do not require hospitalisation.
