Saulos Chilima, the vice president of Malawi, perished in an aircraft accident. The military aircraft carrying Chilima and nine other passengers had been missing since Monday. President Lazarus Chakwera declared on Tuesday that the plane had been located in the Chikangawa forest to the north of Lilongwe, the country’s capital.
In a televised speech, Chakwera declared that there were no survivors in the entirely wrecked aeroplane. He described it as a horrible tragedy and paid tribute to Chilima, a politician and a human being of great character.
Chilima and his friends had left Lilongwe early on Monday, but the flight control authorities advised them to return to Lilongwe just before their destination was supposed to be landed because of the poor weather.
