In the latest imbroglio over Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has upped the ante by recognising rebel-held two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, further heightening tensions of a major flare-up.
These two regions are controlled by Russia-backed separatists and the latest move triggers fears of a full-scale invasion by Russia, media reports said.
According to news agency reports, Putin made the announcement in an address broadcast on state television Monday evening in which he also questioned Ukraine’s statehood and described the country’s leadership as under the control of the West.
