My exposure to Andal, one of the greatest Vishnu devotees, was only through M L Vasanthakumari’s Thiruppavai, a regular feature during the month of Margazhi (December 16-January 14) in Tamil Nadu. The severest winter month down south when the mercury touches 20 degrees celsius. Beyond those 30 verses in Tamil sung beautifully by MLV, I was not exposed to other Andal offerings.
Once I moved out of erstwhile Madras in 1977 (now Chennai), the daily routine of listening to Thiruppavai blaring from temple towers in Mylapore became distant memories. I have lost touch with MLV, Andal, and Thiruppavai. Neither Bombay/Mumbai nor the National Capital Region (NCR) where I live provide that divine and blissful early morning Margazhi experience.
I recently reconnected with Andal, known as Kothai or Nachiyar among the hardcore Vaishnavites, through the professional Carnatic vocalist Sanjay Subrahmanyam. In his weekly dispatch on YouTube under ‘On That Note’, a short and walking down memory lane type of videocast, he spoke about one T M Thyagarajan, again an unknown name to someone like me whose Carnatic music exposure is of recent origin.
Subrahmanyam remembered TMT’s Karpooram narumo (Will camphor smell badly?), a song in Tamil. At that stage also, I did not know of this bhakti geet’s Andal linkage. Over the months, I made it a practice to google and listened to Carnatic musician Subrahmanyam talk about that week. More so, one or two kritis of the vidwans he mentions. Over the next hour, I began the Karpooram narumo odyssey on YouTube.
Expectedly, I began with TMT (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHW4Z-qzzzs), a four-minute version.
கருப்பூரம் நாறுமோ கமலப்பூ நாறுமோ,
திருப்பவளச் செவ்வாய்தான் தித்தித்தி ருக்கும்மோ,

பதினாறா மாயிரவர் தேவிமார் பார்த்திருப்ப,
மதுவாயில் கொண்டாற்போல் மாதவன்றன் வாயமுதம்,
பொதுவாக வுண்பதனைப் புக்குநீ யுண்டக்கால்,
சிதையாரோ வுன்னோடு செல்வப்பெ ருஞ்சங்கே.
பாஞ்சசன் னியத்தைப் பற்பநா பனோடும்,
வாய்ந்தபெ ருஞ்சுற்ற மாக்கிய வண்புதுவை,
ஏய்ந்தபுகழ்ப் பட்டர்பிரான் கோதைதமி ழீரைந்தும்,
ஆய்ந்தேத்த வல்லா ரவரு மணுக்கரே.
Next in line was, of course, Sanjay with his version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVdIrnXP4pY). He, like TMT, sang two stanzas out of 10 Andal did centuries ago.
